This atlas is undated. The United States plate shows the border between the U.S. and Mexico as it was after the Treaty of Guadeloupe Hidalgo (1848) but before the Gadsden purchase (1854). It also shows Lichtenberg as part of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha, although it was transferred to Prussia in 1834; but this is a small change which could easily have been overlooked, or thought not worth the trouble of correcting. So I assume the atlas dates from between 1848 and 1854.
It was originally sold for "4s. colored, 2s. 6d. plain". The equivalent in modern money would be 20p coloured, 12½p plain. In 1833 it would take a footman or housemaid more than a week to earn this much.
The single plates measure about 90mm x 160mm. There are two double plates, England & Wales and Scotland. These two plates (coincidentally) show coalfields, with a very fine shading, done with diagonal lines at about 110 lines to the inch. This is hard to see even looking at the original plates with the naked eye: so I have made copies England & Wales and Scotland in which I have added light blue to indicate where the coalfields are shown.
