In 1482 Wilhelm, son of Friedrich der Friedfertige died without an heir, and so Thuringia fell to Elector Ernst, third Elector and son of Friedrich der Sanftmütige (the Gentle). Thus all the possessions of the House of Wettin were united for the third time (see maps 1 and 10). The first union lasted for 110 years, the second for 35 years and the third for three years only. Since that time all princes of the House of Wettin have had the title of Prince of Saxony.
